The MTM Kitten logo is the famous logo of an adorable orange tabby kitten meowing. This logo was played right before television shows that were produced by Mary Tyler Moore Enterprises (or MTM) from the 1960s to the 1980s. This logo is of course a spoof of Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s famous Lion named Leo who was shown roaring right before a major motion picture (see it here). The spoof was first shown on the Mary Tyler Moore show in the late 1960s.
A lucky feline named Mimsie was given the role of the famous MTM kitten. The interesting thing about her role is that the camera crew simply could not get her to meow for the camera, so they instead used footage of Mimsie yawning, reversed it, and added in the sound of the meow.
Not only did Mimsie appear as herself, but she was also featured with many different costumes, and sometimes her meow was replaced with other sounds (such as a scary noise or a burp). These changes to the logo often corresponded to the type of television show that was about to play. Check out Mimsie’s detective costume in this logo played before the television show Remington Steele.
