Cat Behaviour: Why Do Cats Love Boxes?

by Paws on Your Heart on December 4, 2013

Toby in boxCats love boxes … everybody knows it. From small kittens to large wildcats, (see this Big Cat Rescue video), cats just love to spend their days laying on and in boxes.

So what’s the appeal?

Fun: Cats love to play in boxes. A cat can pounce out of the box to capture prey, they can jump in and out of a box, and they can climb on top to be the King or Queen of Box Mountain.

Cozy: Boxes are small enclosed places, which is exactly what cats love to sleep in. Boxes create a safe, protected enclosure where they can take a catnap all day long.

Instinct: Just like out in the wild, cats in the home will look for locations to hide, while still surveying their surroundings, which is why boxes are the perfect hideout.

Placing boxes around the home is a great way to create a fun, enriching environment for any feline to enjoy. It’s the all-in-one object that can be a toy, a hiding spot, and a bed. What more could a cat ask for?

Many of the Paws On Your Heart cats love boxes – just look at our boy Toby in the picture above. Does your cat love boxes? Do you have any pictures of your cat in his or her very own box fort? Let us know in the comments section below, and send us your pictures to service@pawsonyourheart.com.

Anytime I end up with a new empty box in my home office, my cat Simone finds it immediately. I enjoy hearing her contented sighs as she sleeps in it during the day. 🙂
