Your cat loves you!
If your cat follows you around all the time, he is showing you how much he loves and adores you. Obviously if your cat wants to spend a lot of time with you, it means that he is very affectionate towards you, and he looks to you as a “leader” and a best friend.
In addition to being affectionate, cats are actually quite social – contrary to popular belief. Although cats don’t live in packs like dogs, they still love to be around others, even if it’s just beside them on the couch or in the same room as them.
You are very lucky if you have a cat who loves to follow you everywhere. This cat behaviour proves that your kitty looks up to you, and is your friend for life!

My cat’s name is Shadow, and that’s what he is exactly: my shadow as you describe, except he does not sit on me, he lies next to me and always has to touch me with one of his paws. His sister Shade, is also what her name means: she remains in the shade, she’s shy and cool (independant) also very affectionate but only when she wants to.
