Why do cats knead?

This is a question that we’re sure many cat owners ponder during a cuddle session with their feline friend who has jumped up onto their lap, and has begun to purr and march in place (aka knead).

Luckily, we’ve got a few answers that could help to answer the question “why do cats knead?”

Marking Territory

Cats have scent glands all over their bodies, including their paws. When kneading an object felines are able to leave the scent of their pheromones behind with their paws so that they can mark their territory. So whenever you see your feline friend kneading an object (including your lap), kitty is marking it as his or her own.

Kitten Instinct

Kneading is an instinctive behaviour for our feline friends. All cats learn to knead their mother’s belly as a way to stimulate milk flow. This behaviour likely reminds cats of the comfort and security of their mother. This comfort seems to be reflected in the fact that most cats purr with content, then immediately fall asleep after kneading a lap, a soft pillow, or a fuzzy blanket.

Ancient Instinct

One interesting theory about kneading is that it’s part of an ancient cat instinct. It’s believed that felines who lived outside or in the wild would create a comfortable bed by stomping down on grass or the ground to flatten it. This certainly would make sense as to why cats march in place when they’re kneading.

No matter the reason for this interesting cat behaviour, we think that it will always be a feline trait that we cat enthusiasts will always love.

Important Information

Remember not to be upset if your feline friend accidentally extends his or her claws while kneading. By kneading your lap or chest your kitty is only complimenting you by letting you be the comfortable cushion where he or she will take a nap. If your kitty’s sharp claws concern you, you could always place a pillow, blanket, or sweater between the two of you. You can also take the opportunity to trim kitty’s claws while he or she sleeps to prevent accidental scratches in the future.
