Famous Friday: Sagwa

by Paws on Your Heart on June 26, 2015

Today’s famous feline is a cute Chinese Siamese animated cat. Sagwa is the star of her very own kids television show called Sagwa, The Chinese Siamese Cat, which is based on the book Sagwa, The Chinese Siamese Cat written by Amy Tan. Thanks to the fun adventures and educational themes of this television show, it became extremely popular with Canadian children during the early 2000s. So what can we tell you about Sagwa?

Sagwa the cat is a white cat with black markings, though she was originally pure white in colour. The Siamese markings that she has are actually the result of her accidentally falling into a pot of ink on the Magistrate’s desk. See how Sagwa got her markings HERE.

Sagwa is no ordinary cat either; she is actually a member of the Miao family, a royal family of cats who live in Hong Kong in the early 1900s. The special thing about this family of cats is that they are able to write with their tails. Because of this special ability, Sagwa becomes very talented in calligraphy and in creating artwork. In addition to being great with her tail, this cartoon feline is known for being loyal, curious, kind, and quick thinking, and she is always up for an adventure.

Interesting Facts:

  • The name “Sagwa” translates to “Silly Melon.”
  • Sagwa was born in the Year of the Dog.
