Felix the Cat is one of the most recognizable cartoon images in popular culture, and for good reason. The black cat Felix was introduced to the public by Otto Messmer in the 1920s, which led him to become the most famous cat in popular culture (he may have even been one of the most famous celebrities of his era).
Felix began his climb to stardom with many silent films, short films, and comic strips. His very first silent film was entitled “Feline Follies“, a film produced by Pat Sullivan’s studio in 1919. Felix the Cat became so popular that he was soon featured on all sorts of merchandise from toys to posters and postcards. The MTM Kitten logo is the famous logo of an adorable orange tabby kitten meowing. This logo was played right before television shows that were produced by Mary Tyler Moore Enterprises (or MTM) from the 1960s to the 1980s. This logo is of course a spoof of Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s famous Lion named Leo who was shown roaring right before a major motion picture (see it here). The spoof was first shown on the Mary Tyler Moore show in the late 1960s.

Morris the Cat is famous for being the feline face of 9 Lives Cat Food. Morris is known for being a finicky eater, and he chooses only to eat 9 Lives food. Morris even puts his signature on each and every can of cat food to show his approval.
A professional animal handler named Bob Martwick discovered the very first Morris at the Hinsdale Humane Society in 1968. This tabby cat soared to stardom in the 1970s as he became the official model for 9 Lives. Since his introduction, the character of Morris the Cat has been played by 3 different rescue cats. The title of Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office is an important title that is given to very special cat government officials in the United Kingdom. Employing cats as government officials isn’t a new trend in the United Kingdom either. In fact, there have been cats employed as government mousers since 1515 thanks to Henry VIII’s church officer Cardinal Wolsey. Upon taking the position of Lord Chancellor, Wolsey brought in a resident feline, and cats have resided as government mousers ever since. Today there are over 100,000 cats working as official government officials in the United Kingdom.
Although several cats have been called the Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, only 2 of the resident cats at 10 Downing Street have ever been officially given this title: Humphrey and Larry. These two famous felines are the stars of today’s Famous Friday post.

Tama the stationmaster cat is today’s Famous Feline. She’s a hard working, and much loved feline at the Kishi Railway Station in Kinokawa, Wakayama, Japan.
How could a cat possibly be the stationmaster at a railway station?
It all began in 2006. Wakayama Railway decided to cut costs by switching to an unmanned railway system. In order to ensure that each station was running properly, they were each assigned a local stationmaster. Kishi Station chose a neighbourhood grocer named Toshiko Koyama. Toshiko cared for many stray cats at the station, including her newly adopted cat named Tama.
