Do you find cat fur all over your furniture? Are your clothes covered in an extra layer of fur? Is there more flying fur than dust being picked up by your vacuum cleaner?  If this sounds like your home… then your kitty might have a shedding problem.

No matter if a cat has long or short hair, shedding is a natural process for every indoor cat. In fact, cats that live indoors tend to shed more because they are exposed to different “weather” factors such as air conditioning and warm furnace air. Because of this, a feline’s body will have a hard time recognizing what season it is, and s/he will shed fur more often.

Cleaning up this fur can be frustrating, but luckily, cat shedding is an easy problem to fix. The following tips will help to control the amount of excess cat fur in your home:

1. The first thing you can do to reduce the amount of excess fur in your home is to groom your feline friend’s coat. Bathing and brushing a cat regularly will help to remove excess fur, and will keep a cat’s coat in tip-top shape. Try brushing your kitty’s fur at least once a week, and use pet bathing wipes to wash away any excess fur, dirt, and dander.

2. Next, try to monitor where your kitty spends the most time sitting and sleeping. If your cat has a favourite spot on the couch, try placing a blanket or towel over the cushion to contain the cat fur. This cover will catch most of the excess fur, and it can easily be removed and cleaned when you have guests.

If you would prefer that your kitty doesn’t sit on your furniture, you can also purchase cat only furniture, such as a cat bed, or cat tower. This way, your feline friend will only shed on his or her own furniture, and will (hopefully) keep away from your favourite couch.

3. Finally, if you really want to control cat shedding, you might want to purchase higher quality food for your cat. Food that has high quality ingredients will help to keep a cat’s fur shiny and healthy.

As a cat owner you will likely have to clean up around the house more often to contain the excess cat fur, and you might have to invest in a sticky roller to keep your clothing fur free. In our opinion, however, this is a small price to pay to have a loving feline friend living in your home.
