Is your cat causing you grief by urinating outside of his or her litter box?

One of the main cat behaviour problems that we face as cat owners is whether our feline friend is correctly using the litter box. While most cats use the litter box with few issues, some cats just end up urinating or defecating on the living room floor, or right beside the litter box… We have had our fair share of experience with this cat behaviour problem, so we can offer you some common reasons for this behaviour.

Is your feline friend feeling under the weather?

Health problems such as kidney or liver failure are a common reason for this cat behaviour problem. With this in mind, you should make sure that your kitty is in good health before considering any of the other causes on this list. Book an appointment with your Veterinarian to ensure that your feline friend is not suffering from a serious health problem.

How clean is the litter box?

Cats don’t really have an interest in using a dirty litter tray. Think about it… would you want to use a dirty washroom? Our feline friends have powerful noses, which means that the smell of dirty litter is very unappealing to them. Try to scoop the tray once a day, and change the litter at least every two weeks.

Has your kitty been experiencing stress?

Our feline friends can become stressed out very easily. Has something changed in your home recently? Cats can react negatively to anything from a rearrangement of furniture to drastic home renovation. Having strange people in your home (especially people that your kitty doesn’t know) can cause stress too, especially if kitty has to walk past these strangers to use the litter box. Make sure to monitor your cat’s behaviour in what may be a stressful situation to make sure he or she does not have an adverse reaction to the change.

By trying to narrow down the causes for this behaviour, you can easily begin to understand what is causing this cat behaviour problem, which means that you are one step closer to being able to solve this problem once and for all.
