Cats Around the World: Amsterdam’s KattenKabinet Museum

by Paws on Your Heart on April 4, 2013

Amsterdam is a very popular destination for tourists visiting Europe. This world-renowned city has all kinds of historical attractions that have the ability to entertain anyone. Even cat enthusiasts have attractions specifically targeted toward them. One of these attractions is an interesting museum called KattenKabinet (or Cat Cabinet).

The KattenKabinet museum is in a beautiful Patrician style home located by the Herengracht canal in Amsterdam. A wealthy Dutchman named William Meijer founded the museum in 1990 so that he could preserve the memory of his cat John Pierpont Morgan. This museum is entirely cat themed, with an array of cat inspired art, sculptures, books, and posters from all over the world. There are even resident cats that can be seen lounging on the classical style furniture in the home.

Although cats are the main theme of the museum, they are not the only star attraction. The home is an original 1700s Patrician style home, and is beautifully decorated with wood panelling, fancy chandeliers, and large fireplaces. The great thing about this decor is that it can be admired by anyone, not just cat enthusiasts.

KattenKabinet is definitely a must see for the travelling cat enthusiast. It only takes a small amount of time to look around the small museum, so you can definitely squeeze it into a day of sightseeing.

If you’d like a glimpse inside of the KattenKabinet museum, be sure to check out the museum’s official website.
