Famous Friday: Casper the Cat

by Paws on Your Heart on January 25, 2013

With a name like Casper, this famous feline might conjure up images of a friendly ghost to those who have never heard of him. However, Casper is not a ghost, but a sneaky cat from Plymouth, Devon, England. Casper the cat has been featured in magazines, newspapers, and on television because of his fascinating interest in riding on the bus.

You may be wondering how a cat could possibly ride the bus by itself… but Casper the cat figured out exactly how to do it.

Every day Casper would catch the bus by himself at a bus stop in front of his home, ride it for one hour (approximately 11 miles), and get off again near his home. The bus drivers were well aware of Casper’s interest in riding the bus and they would ensure that Casper would always have a pleasant ride by posting signs to warn other riders of Casper’s presence.

Casper lived happily from 1997-2010. His unusual antics even inspired his owner Susan Finden to write a book in his memory called Casper the Commuting Cat: The True Story of the Cat Who Rode the Bus and Stole Our Hearts, which tells the unusual story of this brilliant cat. Casper the cat is a tribute to felines everywhere, as he showed the world how intelligent and misunderstood cats really are.
