Famous Friday: Dewey Readmore Books

by Paws on Your Heart on January 11, 2013

Dewey Readmore Books is famous for his real life adventures living in a library in Spencer, Iowa. Dewey became the resident cat at the Spencer Public Library after being discovered by the staff in a freezing book depository in January of 1988. The employees at the library immediately fell in love with Dewey and they decided to adopt him as the resident library cat. Dewey was nursed back to health and was taken in for his routine vaccinations to ensure that he would live a long and healthy life at the library.

And live a long life he did….

Dewey lived in the library from 1988 – 2006, bringing happiness and comfort to the residents of Spencer during his stay. Visitors to the library could always find Dewey lounging around the library, especially in any empty box that he could find.

Dewey Readmore Books became quite a famous cat, and recently his life was documented and shared with the world in the book Dewey: The Small Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, written by Vicki Myron. Vicki Myron worked at the library throughout Dewey’s entire stay and got to know him very well. This book is one of our favourite cat books, and it is clearly a worldwide favourite as it has reached New York Times Bestseller status.
