Famous Friday: Garfield

Today’s Famous Friday is a Guest Post by Christine Walker

Do you feel like Garfield before he has had his coffee? Are your eyes bloodshot, walking in a zombie like state, ready to fall asleep instantly if only somebody would give you your blue blanket. We all know what it is like to experience sleep deprivation. Your eyes are bloodshot and your mood is so bad that you are seeing red everywhere you look.  Instead of taking your bad mood out on the dog, like Garfield does, make it your New Year’s Resolution to try these cat approved tips to improve your mood:

  1. Seek Sunshine: Just by watching your pet cat curl up in a sunny spot, you can see how cozy it looks. Your cat knows the wonderful effects of sunlight and now you should too. Whenever possible use natural lighting in your home. Opening the blinds is uplifting to your mood, good for the environment, and helps you save on your electrical bill.
  2. Schedule Your Sleep:  Garfield would never willingly pull an all-nighter and neither should you. Garfield knows the value of a good night’s sleep. Try to develop a routine by going to bed at the same time every night. Don’t worry if something comes up to throw you off of schedule, just get right back into your routine the next night.
  3. Know When Enough Is Enough:  Garfield loves his sleep but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. If you slept in too late this morning, you may find that you have trouble falling asleep tonight because you’re still wide awake. Try adjusting your sleep schedule. It will take some trial and error to find the right amount for your body.
  4. Recognize Warning Signs:  You can tell when Garfield hasn’t had enough sleep because he becomes cranky (we all do). Garfield is suddenly fighting with his friend Odie more than ever before. It is hard to be in your best mood when all you can think about is how exhausted you are. Your body and your friends will thank you for getting enough rest so that you can be at your best.
  5. Keep an Eye on the Clock: Not all of us have iron clad stomachs like Garfield. If I ate an entire dish of lasagne at midnight, my stomach would complain all night long. When you feel sick, it is harder to balance healthy eating and getting the right amount of sleep. Remember to listen to your body to find the right balance, even if it means giving up midnight snacks.

Garfield has his good days and his bad days just like the rest of us. If you follow these helpful tips, your body will be so happy that you might just hear it purr.
