Famous Friday: Winnie the Cat

by Paws on Your Heart on December 28, 2012

Winnie the cat is a brave feline who was able to save the lives of her owners when they would have been unable to save themselves.

Winnie’s heroic act took place on the night of March 24, 2007 in the home of Eric and Cathy Keesling in New Castle, Indiana. On this night, the sleeping family was completely unaware that a gasoline-powered water pump had released carbon monoxide throughout their home. The smell of this gas is undetectable by the human nose, but luckily, the feline nose is very sensitive and the family’s cat Winnie immediately noticed something was wrong.

Upon noticing something was wrong in the house, Winnie ran to Eric and Cathy’s bedroom and began to meow and push the couple out of bed. When Cathy finally arose from bed, she noticed that she was quite disoriented. Cathy decided to phone 911, and it was a good thing that she did because the couple found their son Michael unconscious on the floor near his bedroom. Due to her keen instincts, Winnie was able to rescue her family that night.

In 2007, Winnie the cat was awarded the APSCA Cat of the Year award due to her heroic actions that fateful night.
