Famous Friday: Hello Kitty

by Paws on Your Heart on April 26, 2013

Hello Kitty is one of the most famous feline cartoons in the world. Her face and iconic red bow are easy to recognize, and her image can be found on everything from hair clips to automobiles. So what is it that makes this cute kitty so popular?

The white furred feline was introduced to the Japan in 1974 on a little purse made by the company Sanrio who is known for their “cute” products. Sanrio chose to make Hello Kitty trendy in Japan right from the start. The company decided to make Hello Kitty of British heritage because foreign countries were a huge trend in Japan at the time. They even decided to give her an entire personality and profile:

Hello Kitty was born on November 1, along with her twin sister Mimmy. She is 5 apples tall, and is the weight of 3 apples. She is said to be smart and cheerful, and she loves baking, collecting cute things, and creative subjects in school.

Hello Kitty was an immediate success. Sanrio experienced huge growth after her introduction, and in 1976 the company decided to expand sales into the United States.

Although she was originally marketed toward younger girls, Hello Kitty has become a character that even adults can’t get enough of. She has even become an integral part of the Kawaii (or “Cute”) culture in Japan, a culture based around adorable, beautiful, and lovable things.

Today, Hello Kitty can be found on pretty much any item you can think of including nail art, clothing, accessories, home appliances, automobiles, and even home design products (Check out this Hello Kitty Home). In addition to being featured on endless varieties of products, Hello Kitty also has her own television series, music album, theme park, and even a cafe!

Whether it’s because of her cute feline appearance, her lovable personality, or simply her versatile image, the Hello Kitty trend doesn’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon.
