Famous Friday: Luna and Artemis

by Paws on Your Heart on September 13, 2013

Luna and Artemis are talking cat characters in the anime (Japanese cartoon) series Sailor Moon. Luna appears first as she helps Sailor Moon, the main character, discover her magical powers. She serves as a guide and voice of reason to Sailor Moon, though her logical and blunt advice isn’t always appreciated. Artemis appears similarly to Sailor Venus, a friend and teammate of Sailor Moon. He too serves as an advisor and friend, and helps Sailor Moon, Sailor Venus, and their teammates along their path as they fight evil doers.

These two cats’ large eyes aren’t considered unusual in the world of Sailor Moon, though the yellow crescent moon shapes they each have on their foreheads are unique. The moons are also the source of their powers and speech abilities. When Luna first appears, some children have put a band-aid on her forehead and are taunting her. Sailor Moon rescues Luna and removes the band-aid, and it’s only then that Luna can speak to her.

Early in the series, Luna receives instructions from a mysterious voice in the arcade calling himself ‘Central Control’. The voice eventually turns out to belong to Artemis, and though Luna is at first annoyed by him, they become close friends and fall in love. Eventually they have a grey kitten together named Diana.

Following the cosmic theme of the series, Luna, Artemis, and Diana all have names related to the moon. Luna is the Latin word for ‘Moon’, Artemis was the Greek goddess of the moon, and Diana was the Roman goddess of the moon.
