Famous Friday: Tom Cat

by Paws on Your Heart on September 20, 2013

Tom Cat is the famous grey and white domestic shorthair cat in the comedic cartoon cat and mouse duo Tom and Jerry. Tom rarely says a word, and he spends his days attempting to pull pranks on and torment his rival, Jerry Mouse in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon series Tom and Jerry.

Tom Cat first appeared in 1940 in the cartoon’s first episode titled “Puss Gets The Boot” where his name was actually Jasper, not Tom. It was not until the second episode of the series titled “The Midnight Snack” when this cartoon cat was given his famous name, Tom Cat.

The Tom and Jerry series is slapstick comedy based, with the cartoon cat and mouse duo constantly trying to torment one another with a series of elaborate schemes and pranks. Often, it is Tom Cat who chooses to torment (and sometimes even try to eat) his friend Jerry Mouse. Of course, Tom’s schemes often fail because Jerry is able to foil Tom’s plans.

Although the rivalry between this duo usually features a series of attacks, the rivalry is more of a game between the two. In fact, there are several episodes that feature either Tom Cat or Jerry Mouse getting themselves in mortal danger – in these situations the other character will always try to rescue the one who is in danger.

In addition to Tom Cat’s relationship with Jerry Mouse, he also has several love interests throughout the series. His most notable girlfriends are a fluffy beige cat named Toots who appeared in both the cartoon series and the comic book series, and a beautiful white female cat named Toodles Galore who is the only female cat to appear in more than two episodes of the series.

Although Tom Cat is rarely heard speaking in the cartoon series, his personality shines through in his crazy antics, which has made him a much loved famous cartoon cat that has lasted generations.
