Famous Friday: Nermal

by Paws on Your Heart on August 30, 2013

Today’s famous feline is adorable, and he knows it. Nermal is the adorable grey tabby kitten from the Garfield comic strips and television shows. And yes, Nermal is a boy… he’s often mistaken for a girl kitten because of his long, fluttery eyelashes, his high pitched voice, and his feminine personality. So what makes this cartoon cat so cute and memorable?

Nermal first appeared in the Garfield comic strip on September 3, 1979 (read it HERE). It is initially stated that Nermal belongs to Jon’s parents, however, this is only ever mentioned once. After his first appearance, Nermal began regularly appearing in the comics – often visiting Garfield’s home unannounced. Unfortunately for this self-titled “World’s Cutest Kitten”, he is one of the may things that annoys Garfield. Garfield can’t stand having him around, so he always tries to get rid of him – often attempting to ship him to Abu Dhabi. This is one of the Garfield’s most popular stunts.

In addition to appearing in the comic strips, Nermal has also appeared in the television cartoons, Garfield and FriendsThe Garfield ShowGarfield Gets Real, Garfield’s Fun Fest, and Garfield’s Pet Force. He also appeared in the motion picture Garfield: The Movie, however in the film he is portrayed as an adult Siamese cat rather than a grey kitten.

An interesting fact about Nermal is that he continues to be a kitten throughout the entire series. He often associates his small stature to his love of coffee by stating that it has stunted his growth.

Garfield may not think that Nermal is very cute, but we sure do, and we certainly enjoy reading and watching his adventures.
