Famous Friday: Snagglepuss

by Paws on Your Heart on December 11, 2015

“Heavens to Murgatroyd!” This cartoon mountain lion is famous for his memorable catchphrases and his fancy clothing choices… do you know who he is? That’s right, today’s famous feline is Snagglepuss.

Snagglepuss was introduced as a Hanna-Barbera cartoon character in 1959. He is pink mountain lion who loves to wear an upturned collar, shirt cuffs, and a string tie. The funny thing is, these accessories aren’t actually attached to a shirt, so although he is technically dressed up, he still looks a bit silly.

Snagglepuss’s first appearance was in The Quick Draw McGraw Show, and soon became a regular on the popular cartoon The Yogi Bear Show. His character is friendly, civilized, and a bit of a goof. He lives in a cavern, and although he always tries to make it more suitable to live in, his home always ends up worse than it was to begin with.

One of the most memorable things about Snagglepuss is his catchphrase “Heavens to Murgatroyd!” and “Exit Stage Left!” Do these catchphrases sound familiar? Check them out HERE.

As with many cartoon characters, Snagglepuss became so popular that he was picked up by a popular company as part of their advertising campaign. In the 1960s, the brand to pick up Snagglepuss was Kellogg’s, who featured him in many of their cereal commercials.

Interesting Facts:

  • Snagglepuss was originally coloured orange and went by the name “Snaggletooth”.
  • The character of Snagglepuss was voiced by Bert Lahr, who also played the cowardly lion in movie The Wizard of Oz.
