Cats have the cutest little noses, but don’t be fooled by their size. The feline nose is quite powerful. In fact, cats have a sense of smell that is 14 times stronger than a human’s sense of smell!

Although this can be attributed to the feline nose being comparatively larger than a human’s is, this is also due to a very special organ in the cat’s mouth called “The Jacobson’s Organ”. This special organ is located behind kitty’s front teeth, and allows a cat to not only smell, but also analyze the scent. If you have seen your kitty make a funny face (such as a frown) after smelling an area, he has likely just used his Jacobson’s Organ. Felines curl their lips when inhaling air into their mouths, which is what gives them this silly grimacing expression.

So don’t be offended the next time your feline friend makes a silly face after smelling something on or around you. He’s just using his Jacobson’s Organ to investigate the scent.
