Our Top 10 Favourite Feline Actors in Movies and On Television

by Paws on Your Heart on March 16, 2020

We just love when cats are featured as real actors in movies and on television. These movies and television shows prove just how smart and talented cats truly are. Though it was hard to choose just 10 cats, here are our top 10 favourite felines (in alphabetical order) in movies and television:

Binx – Hocus Pocus (1993)
This smart black feline starred alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and Bette Midler as a talking cat named Binx in the Halloween film Hocus Pocus, which is a fun family film about witchcraft in Salem.

Cat — Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
The loveable, and nameless feline that starred alongside Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s was played by Orangey the tabby cat. Orangey was the star of many films during this decade, which made him quite the famous feline.

Crookshanks – Hermione’s Cat in the Harry Potter book series and film series, specifically featured in The Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
Crookshanks is a smart, orange coloured cat with a squished face and a bushy tail. Crookshanks plays an integral role in helping Harry, Ron, and Hermione solve a mystery in The Prisoner of Azkaban movie. A Ginger Persian cat named Crackerjack plays this brilliant feline.

Jake — The Cat from Outer Space (1978)
Playing the main character Jake in the movie The Cat from Outer Space would have been a tough job for any one cat. That is why 2 Abyssinian cats named Amber and Rumple collectively brought this alien cat to life in the film.

Mr. Bigglesworth – Austin Powers (1997)
In the Austin Powers series, Mr. Bigglesworth actually begins as a Persian cat. But after being frozen for several years alongside his owner Dr. Evil, he loses all of his hair. A Sphynx cat named Ted NudeGent played this diabolical feline. Even though the main part of his job was to sit nicely on Mike Myers’s lap, he still did a great job.

Puss in Boots – Shrek (2004, 2007, 2010), Puss in Boots (2011)
OK so this cat is a cartoon cat voiced by Antonio Banderas, but he’s such an adorable cat that we had to include him. The animators knew just what to do to make this cat seem realistic, with his big eyes and feisty attitude Puss in Boots in a very memorable movie cat.

Salem Saberhagen – Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1996-2003)
Salem the cat is an integral part of the Sabrina the Teenage Witch series. This sly cat was actually played by 4 trained black American Shorthair cats named Elvis, Lucy, Salem, and Witch.

Sassie – Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993)
This Himalayan cat named Tiki did a great acting job in Homeward Bound. Not only was she able to follow direction to create a loveable character, but she was also able to work side by side with 2 dogs!

Snowbell – Stuart Little (1999)
Snowbell is the charming, yet jealous housecat in the movie Stuart Little. A beautiful white Persian cat plays this role perfectly.

Tonto – Harry and Tonto (1974)
The orange medium haired tabby cat who played Tonto in the award winning movie Harry and Tonto is memorable for his role as a best friend for Harry, an older man who doesn’t quite know his place in life anymore. We also remember this feline as a great actor who was even trained to be leash walked with the actor Art Carney.

I’m going to date myself here, but I remember seeing The Cat From Outer Space when I was little and I loved it! Found it scrolling through channels a few weeks ago and made hubs watch it with me. It really stands the test of time.

What about General Sterling Price in “True Grit”, as played by Ginger Cat.

New Coen Brothers film “Inside Llewyn Davis” stars a cat.
