Cat Behaviour: Why Do Cats Run Around The House?

by Paws on Your Heart on November 5, 2015

Kitten has real estateDo you often hear your cat running at top speed all around your house like a maniac? These spurts of energy are common among felines, and though they’re strange, there is a good explanation for them …

Burning Off Excess Energy: The most common reason for this crazy running behaviour is because your cat is trying to get rid of his excess energy. This could be why your cat runs around just before he falls asleep for the night (or before he naps during the day).

Post Bathroom Energy: As funny as it may seem, some cats simply feel more energized after using the toilet. There have been many cats in our lives that we have seen zoom out of the litter box, up the stairs, and all around the house just after using the toilet.

Medical Condition: Although it’s rare, sometimes cats run around a lot because of a medical problem. This is most commonly a disease called rippling skin disorder, where your cat’s fur will sticking up, and he will begin to bite his skin or his tail. Learn more about this feline disease here: http://www.vet.cornell.edu/FHC/health_resources/HyperesthesiaSyndrome.cfm. This is a serious condition, and if this sounds like your cat, you should take him to the Vet immediately.

We hope this answers the commonly asked question about why cats sometimes decide to run around the house like crazy.

When have you caught your cat running around like a maniac? What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen your cat do during one of these energy spurts? Let us know in the comments section below.
