Famous Friday: Winnie the Cat

by Paws on Your Heart on December 28, 2012

Winnie the cat is a brave feline who was able to save the lives of her owners when they would have been unable to save themselves.

Winnie’s heroic act took place on the night of March 24, 2007 in the home of Eric and Cathy Keesling in New Castle, Indiana. On this night, the sleeping family was completely unaware that a gasoline-powered water pump had released carbon monoxide throughout their home. The smell of this gas is undetectable by the human nose, but luckily, the feline nose is very sensitive and the family’s cat Winnie immediately noticed something was wrong.

Upon noticing something was wrong in the house, Winnie ran to Eric and Cathy’s bedroom and began to meow and push the couple out of bed. When Cathy finally arose from bed, she noticed that she was quite disoriented. Cathy decided to phone 911, and it was a good thing that she did because the couple found their son Michael unconscious on the floor near his bedroom. Due to her keen instincts, Winnie was able to rescue her family that night.

In 2007, Winnie the cat was awarded the APSCA Cat of the Year award due to her heroic actions that fateful night.

Famous Friday: Maru

by Paws on Your Heart on December 21, 2012

Although our spokes-cat Noodle would rather not admit it, there’s another cute, famous cat out there on the internet.

What feline could compare to Noodle? Maru of course!

Maru is famous for… simply being himself. He is a large Scottish Fold feline that has become an internet sensation with his adorable YouTube videos. In fact, Since 2008 this famous feline’s videos have had over 150 million views on YouTube!

Today Maru has a Facebook page, a Twitter account, a YouTube account, 2 books, and has been the star of many Japanese advertisements!

If you would like to see Maru in action we highly recommend checking out his YouTube videos (though his book I Am Maru is quite cute too).

Famous Friday: Oscar the Cat

by Paws on Your Heart on December 14, 2012

Oscar the cat is one unusual feline. Why you may ask? Well Oscar can predict death…

Okay, so that may sound a bit scary… but we’ll tell you how and why Oscar is a unique and special feline.

Oscar the cat was brought to the Steere House Nursing and Rehab Center in Rhode Island as a companion animal for the residents of the building. However, Oscar doesn’t readily visit with the residents at all. Instead, he walks from room to room checking on everyone to see if they are okay. If the residents are happy and healthy, Oscar will carry on his way. It’s only when Oscar notices a patient is having a problem that he will stay in the room and curl up right beside them.

Oscar is able to predict death with such accuracy that when the doctors and nurses see Oscar in a room, they have enough time to call a patient’s family and friends to let them know that they should come down to have one final visit with their loved one. For those residents that don’t have family and friends available for a final visit Oscar will provide companionship by curling up beside them all day.

David Dosa has worked with Oscar for several years and has written about Oscar’s incredible ability in his book Making Rounds with Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat. If you would like to learn about this phenomenal feline you should check out David Dosa’s book or watch THIS VIDEO of Oscar on the job.
